I've just had a look at the Ports of Call for this cruise and the only one that I've visited before is Funchal in Madeira. I'd recommend the Cable car ride up the mountain and a vist to the Botanic gardens whilst you are at the top. depending on how adventurous you are feeling either get the cable car back down or go bouncing down the cobbles in a wicker toboggan. If you are not sure how to get to the Cable Car station just grab a taxi (there are usually a long line of them where the ship docks). Once you come back down, its a short walk back to the ship but I'd recommend a stroll through the main street of Funchal itself and perhaps a stop at one of the waterfront cafes for a coffee and just take in the view. I was there on new years day 2 years ago and it was bright and sunny and probably about 65F. I was wandering about in trousers and just a long sleeved tshirt and wasn't cold and I definitely needed by sunglasses. Hopefully you will be in madeira for New years Eve as the firework display that the Island puts on just before midnight is absolutely magnificent and lasts for almost an hour. It was the most memorable New year I've ever celebrated. Enjoy your cruise - its a wonderful experience and I'm sure you will have loads of fun and be itching to go on another when you get back
We've been in Lanzarote in the first week in January and it was beautiful, blue skies all week and we were in shorts and tshirts...temp in the seventies. Have also been to Madeira and would agree with the other reply.
Hi I have done this trip many times and will aslo be on board the week of the 5th joining in Gran Canaria. All places we call at the trips can be done by taxi much cheeper than trips from the ship, join up with another couple and it is even cheeper. Just ask the taxi driver for a tour they are very honest. Who knows we may bunp into you. Have a great time. Norma and Derek Beard.
