Winstanley - Answered a Question by Midgley (19 Oct 07 01:00)

Hi Have been on this cruise twice and it really is good but the ports are all very industrial. Nothing scenic about them at all. However, if you are intending to do the main trips - i.e. Cairo for the Pyramids, The Valley of the Kings, the Dead Sea and Petra and are just going for the one week then you wouldn't really be making your own way anywhere very much. There are also a number of half-day trips - Sharm, quad biking, glass-bottom boat etc. In one week it is actually very hard work because all the major sites are about 2 or 3 hours away (well worth it incidentally). The first time we went, we actually did two weeks, going around twice and spreading the main trips over the 14 days. The second time we just went for a week and did the trips we hadn't already done and chilled out the rest of the time. Hope this helps. We have loved going with Thomson - it is really relaxed and good fun. Next Jan we are going on the QM2 and are a bit worried that we will find it a bit stuffy. Have a good trip if you decide to go. One other tip - Petra is a lot of walking although you can go part of the way by carriage, camel or donkey.

We have also travelled on a Red Sea cruise on the Celebrtion and had a wonderful time. BUT the ports are not good, very industrial and although it is always great to relax on board, the abundance of flies somewhat detracts from the pleasure of being on deck! If you are unfortunately unable to take the excurions, you may find a cruise around the Canaries or Med more enjoyable as the ports are more likely to be much prettier and more pleasant. I agree with winstanley. This cruise is one NOT to go on if you just want to wander around the ports of call. The only port you can actually do that is Aqaba in Jordan and it's not perhaps the best place for a wander. Celebration is a great ship and the trips are great but if you just want to potter around the ports, stick to the Caribbean or the Med.

If you have mobility problems you might want to think twice about the Petra trip ! Its about two miles from the entrance to the Treasury (as seen in Indiana Jones 3) then another half mile to the Roman theatre and the ONLY toilet facilities, its downhill all the way but then you have to get back to the entrance. The locals have donkeys, camels, 2 person horse drawn carts and horses you can ride, but each section will cost you £10 and there are three sections ! Its a terrific place to see but be aware that getting back to the entrance can be difficult and takes time.
