Generally the staff form Third World countries eg India, Phillipines, Thailand, Indonesia are paid very low wages. On many shipping lines they serve on board for around ten months before getting two months' leave. They rely very heavily on tips to make it all worth while. They do receive board and keep (often in pretty cramped conditions)so this has to be taken into account. The remainder of the staff have variable contracts with some masters on 2 months on and two months leave! I believe that some of the low paid staff can remit their "savings" home at major "turnaround" ports.

.....but you must admit Mr Bishop, it was a pretty weird question with no supplementary explanation. It took 71 hits and no other reply. Perhaps a good job Neil and Ida Down are at sea.

They get paid each month, i do not see anything wrong in the question you have asked! This site is for people who want to use other peoples knowledge, and if thats the question you want to ask then that is fine.
