Find Your Cruise
Hi - have been to Funchal on a number of occasions. Yiu could go up to Monte on the Cable Car (Single ticket) this is a 15 min walk along the promenade to the right of the town. When at the top if you walk to the left there is the tropical gardens, the Toboaggan Ride down or you could go vback to town by bus. You could also visit Blandy's Wine Lodge and taste the Maderia Wine this is in town on the Avenido Arriago. Maderia is a beautiful Island - enjoy yourself - Bil.
Hi, hope this helps, I have done many visits on different ships. Under normal circumstances I would say the taxi is your best option. They provide a good service and are on the jetty on arrival with comprehensive maps of where they will take you. On the down side is the size of Ventura. The last occasion I was in Madeirs there were two pretty small cruise ships alongside and the taxis ran out after about 50mins. So you really need to decide to guarantee a place with a P&O coach or be in the first wave ashore on arrival to get the taxis'. Either way, the best trip is the full round the island all sights included. Lovely island which you will enjoy, I even honeymooned there. Have a good one. Richar.
There is enough to see within walking distance ... from what I can remember, if you turn right from the port and walk along the main road there is a huge 'chair' lift going up to the top of the island where there are fab views, restaurants, a little village, large gardens etc.; there are the 'famous' wicker sleds coming down the hillside; Then once down again there are shops along the front. Really pretty place. Sue.
Hello...I agree with Sue, take the shuttle, then walk to the flower, fish and veg. market which is worth a visit then take the funicular up to the gardens, they are really wonderful, even in the rain. I would miss out on the downhill sled ride but that is up to you and return back to the town and wander around or sit and have a coffee or a beer in the great pavement cafes there. There is a circular bus tour which is not, to my mind, brilliant but others consider it to be ok. Hope that helps....Heathe.
Hi Andy. This is such a beautiful island and would be a great pity to confine your visit to Funchal. Have a look at this website,http://www.madeira-web.com/PagesUK/tourmap.html Camara de Lobos is steeped in history and still scenic, but a must is the drive between Porto Monij and Sao Vicente. Hope this amplifies my earlier missive. Regards, Richar.
Hi andy get a taxi up the hill and do the tobaggon basket
down the hill also there is an open air bus and it takes you all about with head phones to listen to it is really a lovely place margare.
Just back from a week in Madeira ...lovely place would sugggest do your own thing the ship is very near the centre of Funchal and you can walk everywhere.....cable car to Monte is a great day out 2000 ft above sea level great views and lovely old village .If you like gardens then visit the Royal Gardens at Monte well worth seeing beautiful japanese style gardens. Have lunch in the old town just at bottom of the cable car base in Funchal...go down the back streets for a bargain and great food
If P&O still offer the 4x4 trip 'off-roading' thru the interior and in the mountains do it, fantastic!
TJ, West Susse.
Hi there, visited Maderia last year when cruising on P&O Oceana. The taxi drivers are a pain touting for business. Cable cars are good value for money but despite what you hear about the tabogen....it's a waste of money, we were so dissapointed. Lovely place though.
Take a taxi or bus to the Botanical gardens the view from there is breathtaking, then come down after visiting the gardens and go to the market where you can buy plants and fruit etc for great prices even orchid bulbs are about 4 euros. The bus tour is ok too Its a great place to visit. ENJO.
