After reading the postings on this and other sites i am utterly confused as to the merits of cruising.Firstly you book your cruise at the published price then you are told of extra monies for gratuities, dining in alternative restaurants, excursions onshore, service charge on drinks. On some cruise lines I read of indifferent service, cold or luke warm food, scramble for deck loungers. Having already paid a deposit perhaps I should now stop reading any more postings before I am totally bewildered. I have booked to travel with P&O later in 2008 to the Caribbean, have Imade a big mistake?

My theory is to book a port side balcony on the west bound sailings and either an aft balcony or starboard side balcony on an east bound sailing. This is to maximize the amount of sunlight on the balcony during the day. On the westbound transatlantic you will be gaining 6 hours or more over the course of the cruise verses losing 6 hours when sailing eastbound. Clocks change every night.

Having done this trip port side and as near midship as you can get,we were lucky as it was very calm water but if its rough mid ship or towards the front is better,we were next to the lifts but did not have any noise problems and you get the early sun on your balcony.

My recommendation is to go for midships. Any movement of the ship is magnified at either end.
