I have just done a review on the Norwegian Jewel and most of Americans do not like dressing up and we only noticed 3 people with dinner jackets and only a few with suits. They do not really mention formal night in their plus Freestyle Daily paper and therefore people will probably not know you can dress up on that night or people just do not want to bother because it is Freestyle cruising. I would not recommend that you take DJ's. It is not like Princess, P & O or Celebrity where guests dress up. I paid the service charges and did not think you could get out of that! I do not think you could take your own wine on board to drink. The bottles of wine in the restaurant seem quite expensive as we paid 40 US dollars for a bottle of red wine. 10 dollars a day each for gratuities plus 15% on all drinks. Quite expensive. Also the excursions are very expensive and you can get to Pisa, Florence or Rome yourself easily by train. Nice, Monaco and Montecarlo by local bus. If you are a group of 10 you will have a good time - enjoy your holiday.
Our experience of NCL is that while they say that "You can dress up if you want to", the reality is a lot don't & you end up looking like one of the waiters, the Americans especially don't like dressing up & it isn't very grand to see DJ'd people mixed in with people in trainers & shorts, yes, even at dinner! Don't take NCL's tipping procedures if you don't want to. Decide yourself who deserves it. You will talk with fellow table guests & others you meet all about their routine for tipping & just do what you feel is right for you. The enforced daily addition of tips can be reduced right down or eliminated by visiting Guest Relations & telling them how you feel. Our experience is that wine would have to be smuggled on-board in your case, as it is not allowed! Tell the Maitre D on your 1st night about your special days.
I think we have all decided to take suits and one special dress just to celebrate the birthdays, it's the first time we have all been away togehter and will probably be the last for a while. Is the white wine the same price, and are the cocktails expensive? I think we may ask for the service charge to be taken off and give our own tips, it will be £700 in total that a lot of money.I'm sure we will have a good time, we might try and take some of our own wine on board maybe a carton in our cases what do you think.
Whilst we were on the Jewel there were two formal nights. The first one at least 75% dressed formally, however it really is "freestyle." We had to book an early sitting to get into a speciallity restaurant and we were smart whist others were still in shorts! Nobody takes any notice.Do what ever you want to do.
Hi If these are "special" Birthdays, ask about the Celebration Package Last year we celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary on board the Jewel, and had the Celebration Package completely free of charge. Special Meal, Cake, Party with others, Champagne in room, Canapes etc. Fantastic! Jacquie.
