Why question when it quite clearly states in P & O conditions what they will accept. ie sterling cash,sterling travel cheques,sterling personal cheques,credit cards.We were on Arcadia this March and they accepted all the above.
Why make life so difficult. Get a credit card, do the cruise & cut the card up when you get home. Is it really that big a deal?
I asked for constuctive advice not telling me what to do.
My advise was constructive & if you had read the terms of booking as others have done like Macro & Surridge, you wouldn't need to phone P&O 3 times for information that is available to all. Most cruise lines do not accept Maestro Cards & owning a credit card could be invaluable if you get into difficulties when abroad. That's why I consider my advise to be constructive.
They most certainly WILL take cash and travellers cheques. All you do is pay money into your on board account at the START of the cruise and keep topping it up. I have a credit card but I dislike the charge for using one so I just use cash as I know approx what I need. However, I do think having the back up of a credit card is very important. remove the problem of charges, especially when paying for currency , by getting a Nationwide card. Keep the card JUST for your cruises, pay it off in full (or set up a direct debit with them to take out the balance on your card when it is due) that way you will incur no debt, every purchase will be covered /insured by the card company and it is MUCH MUCH SAFER TO USE ABROAD THAN A SWITCHCARD(MAESTRO) which are defrauded with monotonous regularity. I know, I work for a bank ! (Not nationwide ! ).
Thanks for your help but they will definatly not accept cash or travellers cheques this year can you please tell me when you last went on p and o because i am having no luck.
I was worried enough by this to re think. So I got a 2009 brochure and Robinson is RIGHT. the following is directly copied from their web site - "We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, Visa Delta and Visa Debit. We regret we are unable to accept Switch/Maestro, Solo cards, American Express Prepaid Travellers Cheque Credit cards or Visa Electron. We are also unable to accept payment via cheque or by cash." This is very disadvantageous to many Brits who use Switch/maestro debit cards. It surely is because they cannot/do not want to process payments without a pin number, reason - fraud. The payment methods they will accept ,I believe, are all guarenteed by the card producers thus not needing pins to ensure they get their money. They therefore save on staff time and fraud by allowing only registered cards that they can process without further passenger input. Never heard of it on other lines - but this is carnival owned so watch out !!!!!!
I too have re read P&O's New T&C's & yes they do appear to be the first to NOT accept cash. As for debit cards, I know of no lines who take them as every transaction you make needs to be confirmed by the bank & as for Maestro Cards & the like they have little or no use outside the UK. Therefore a credit card would solve all the problems & should you be unfortunate to miss the boat at a port, or any other crisis, it would cover all eventualities.
Just come of the Artemis yesterday.
They do not accept debit cards but do accept personal cheques and the cruise ticket also says they accept cash in settlement of on board accounts.
They still require a credit card to be registered on embarkation. You then can tell reception if you want to settle the on board account by some other means.
There were confused passengers on last weeks cruise. P and O's web site seems unreliable as they do things differently on board.
